Derbyshire Boccia project given seal of approval by London 2012 Inspire programme

‘Go Boccia!’, a new project to develop the sport of boccia in Derbyshire, has been granted the Inspire Mark – the badge of the London 2012 Inspire Programme.

The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Boccia is a Paralympic sport, and Go Boccia! aims to use the magic of the 2012 Games to encourage more disabled young people to play sport.

Through Go Boccia! five community boccia groups will be set up.

The Inspire programme is also welcoming applications from other innovative projects which are inspired by or have taken a new direction because of the 2012 Games. To apply see www.london2012.com/beinspired

CBE for Derbyshire athletics official Chris Cohen

Derbyshire’s Chris Cohen, who was chairman of the Jury of Appeal at the 2008 Paralympic Games, has been awarded a CBE in the New Year Honours List.

Chris, who has been involved in athletics for most of his life as an athlete, coach and official, received the honour for services to sport.

Staff changes at Derbyshire Sport

A new year has meant a new start for several Derbyshire Sport staff members, with Will Evans, Dale Burton, Chloe Morley and Catherine Slater all taking on new roles.

Will Evans has now started work as Partnership Development Manager for Derby West SSP, based at Derby Moor Community Sports College, succeeding Libby Bridge. He can be contacted on W.Evans@derbymoor.derby.sch.uk

Will was previously Senior Competition Manager at Derbyshire Sport. His successor will be Chloe Morley, currently Competition Manager for Derby City, who will take up her new post on March 1.

Until March 1, partners are asked to contact either David Joy or Sarah Jones at Derbyshire Sport regarding any Competition Manager matters which cannot be resolved directly with individual Competition Managers.

Meanwhile Research and Information Officer Dale Burton has left Derbyshire Sport to begin a new role as Policy and Research Analyst at Derbyshire County Council, based at County Hall in Matlock.

Derbyshire Sport Disability Sports Development Officer Catherine Slater is also due leave in early February, to begin a new role as IRIS Project Manager for national charity called Family Action, leading a new county project in Nottinghamshire to provide information to disabled children and their families.

The recruitment process to appoint a new Research and Information Officer, Competition Manager and Disability Sports Development Officer is now underway.

Derbyshire Winter Olympics hopefuls await Team GB Announcement

The 2010 Winter Olympics are being held from February 12 to 28, and later this month a Team GB Announcement will reveal whether Derbyshire hopefuls Nicola Minichiello and Ellie Koyander will be among the competitors.

Nicola, the 2009 University of Derby Sportsperson of the Year, has been widely tipped to win a medal in the bobsleigh at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and on January 26 the Team GB Announcement will confirm who has been selected.

On the same day, Ellie Koyander, Britain's No.1 Freestyle Mogul Skier, will find out whether she has done enough to make the team.

Derbyshire Building Society 10k - get involved!

This year’s Derbyshire Building Society 10k and Family Fun Run is fast approaching, so if you haven’t got your entry in already, now is the time to sign up.

The 10k race will start at 9.30am on Sunday, April 11, with the route taking in Derby city centre before finishing inside Pride Park Stadium, and also includes the Business Team Challenge, sponsored by Cooper Parry.

Meanwhile this year’s 3k Family Fun Run will be fully inclusive.

Or if you don’t fancy running this year, why not volunteer to help at the event. Event organisers Sporting Futures are currently looking for people to join the 10k crew and take on a role such as traffic marshal, baggage handler or stadium steward.

Sports coaches urged to sign up to new directory for Derbyshire

A new directory for qualified sports coaches and leaders in Derbyshire has been created to help meet the expected surge in interest in sport as the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games get closer.

The Derbyshire Sport Coach Database, run by Coaching Derbyshire, has been established so that coaches and leaders across the county can register their details and availability for coaching (both paid and voluntary).

New fencing clubs to be launched in the Dales

The Derbyshire Dales Disability Sport Group has been awarded a grant from Sport England to set up three new satellite fencing clubs.

Weekly coaching sessions will be held at Callow Park Special School in Wirksworth and Ashbourne Leisure Centre, run by experienced national fencing coach Floyd Thomas. Work is also currently taking place to find a venue in Matlock for the third club.

Close battle at county futsal final

Teams from Ecclesbourne School, Chellaston School, Tupton Hall School and Shirebrook School emerged triumphant at the county futsal tournament.

Schools from across Derbyshire fielded teams which competed at the event held at Power League, Derby, after winning their way through local competitions.

Nominations sought for Golf Foundation President's Awards

Nominations are currently being sought for the Golf Foundation President's Awards, which aim to recognise those working to develop grassroots junior golf.

Categories include The Gallacher Award, which will be presented to a volunteer who has made a direct and significant impact in the development of grassroots junior golf.

Awards will also be presented to a school or school sport partnership that has established or developed a junior golf development project for its pupils, and to a project that has demonstrated how golf can be used to promote positive life messages to children and young people.

Sporting feats recognised at Young Achiever Awards

The sporting feats of young people living in Derbyshire were among the accomplishments recognised at this year’s Derbyshire County Council Young Achiever Awards.

Among the winners were Isobel Ashley, who is in the England Girls U15 Table Tennis Team, and kickboxer Natalia Rea, who represented England in the World Championship in Florida, winning two bronze medals.

Kellogg and Minichiello named Olympic Athletes of the Year

Derbyshire athletes Donna Kellogg and Nicola Minichiello have been named 2009 Olympic Athletes of the Year in their respective sports.

The BOA presented a trophy to each of the 33 summer and winter Olympic sports for them to award on an annual basis to their top performing athlete of the year, and in badminton this went to Donna Kellogg and her doubles partner Anthony Clark, while bobsleigh awarded its trophy to Nicola Minichiello and her partner Gillian Cooke.

County Youth Dance Platform

Interface 10, the County Youth Dance Platform for Derbyshire and Derby City, will be held at Buxton Opera House on May 17.

Last year a pilot event held in Derby was a major success, involving more than 400 young people from 27 dance groups, and this year Déda and the U.Dance Derbyshire Steering Group will present Interface 10, which is open to groups of up to 20 dancers aged between 11 and 19.

Groups are invited to submit a dance piece, in any style or genre, of no longer than five minutes in length that is suitable for a family audience.

Focus on Funding

GRANTnet

Derbyshire Sport has teamed up with Derbyshire County Council to use a service called GRANTnet to offer a free-to-use searchable database which can help organisations find suitable funding for their sports activities or projects.

Sports groups can search for funding from a range of different sources including European funding, lottery awards and charitable trusts.

To search the database organisations must first log on to
http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/grantnet to register their details and get a password.

Register for National School Sport Week

This year’s Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week will take place from June 28 to July 2.

Registration is now open, and schools which register by Friday, February 5 will be entered into a free prize draw to win a sporting master class from an Olympic or Paralympic hero during the week.
